Among serious fans of Japanese denim, BONCOURA has acquired a reputation for its uncompromising and exacting standards in materials, construction, and design. In the Japanese denim market, they occupy a rarified air shared with only one or two other luxury denim brands. To celebrate their 15th anniversary, BONCOURA has revisited their classic ‘43 XX denim design, inspired by vintage WWII-era Levi’s 501 denim. This model showcases BONCOURA’s beautiful 100% natural indigo dye, specially developed during a period of trial and error to achieve the perfect end result!
This denim is constructed with BONCOURA’s specially developed 100% cotton, 15oz pink selvage I.D. denim fabric. Slowly woven on vintage shuttle looms, this denim strikes a perfect balance between a smooth feel and subtle slubby surface, offering an authentic vintage texture.
The process to create the natural indigo dye is long and labour-intensive. The harvested and dried leaves of the indigo plant undergo a 3-month fermentation process to transform them into sukumo, the raw material for the dye. During this time, BONCOURA’s skilled artisans monitor the batch daily, adjusting for temperature, humidity, and PH levels to achieve the desired dark indigo tone. This denim is then natural indigo dyed using a “kase dyeing” method, leaving the inner white core of the yarns undyed. Unlike the vast majority of readily available synthetic indigo dyes, the natural indigo dye requires repeated dyeing applications by hand to achieve the dark indigo colour. With wear and washing, this natural indigo denim will fade like no other denim you have seen! Revealing a myriad of light and dark indigo hues as it ages to a beautiful high contrast look!
Inspired by the vintage WWII-era Levi’s, this pair of denim features some amazing vintage details! The fly is constructed with BONCOURA’s specially developed iron doughnut buttons, while the inner pocket bags are constructed with heavyweight olive herringbone twill. The right pocket bag is printed with the kanji character for “indigo”, which will age and crackle to a vintage look! The deerskin patch is made from ultra-thick, premium-grade hide normally reserved for deerskin shirts!
